A cost-effective tool for assessing autism at an early age, typically at preschool.
50+ clinically viable interactive activities that screen for autism in less challenging settings like the home and the classroom. Parents and teachers administer the test; smart result analysis identifies the markers.
Screening that happens where the child is comfortable.
EAST is an interactive tablet app that assists in the early detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder by screening preschoolers through play-based activities — at home, in school, or in a clinic. In Pakistan, missed early detections and late or mistaken diagnoses are common, and a clinical appointment is often out of reach.
The app sits between the family and the professional. A parent or teacher can run the screening without training, and the results give a psychologist something concrete to start from.
EAST is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A positive result is a reason to see a professional — never a conclusion on its own.
Features
What EAST does.
Every activity is designed to be play for the child and a measurement for the adult. Nothing about the session should feel like a test.

What it measures
Five areas, one screening.
EAST was tested with both typically developing and autistic children across the domains clinicians look at first. Each activity scores on time taken, wrong attempts and incorrect answers.

Social response
Relating to people
How a child responds to the adult in the room and to the faces on screen — the first thing a clinician looks at, and the hardest for a parent to judge alone.
Response to name and to direct attention
Eye contact during a shared task
Reaction to praise and encouragement
From the people using it.
I was really worried about my son's delayed speech. I was told about this app and we used it with our son which indicated risk of autism along with other delays. Considering this, we consulted a psychologist who indicated similar concerns and we have now formally started working on his developments.
Parent
I'm working as a psychologist and I've been using this app for the past 4 months during the assessment procedures. It has helped me with the screening and reduced my workload. Moreover I've been asking parents to use it in their routines which has helped in catering their concerns as well.

Research
Peer-reviewed, not just built.
EAST is supported by internationally accredited research into a tangible, interactive and clinically viable set of activities for screening in less stressful environments. Medical professionals, parents of autistic children and teachers were surveyed through focus groups to understand why early detections are missed. Its usability and effectiveness have been published.
